Why We Absorb Their Pain
And How to Let It Go
When we assist someone who is deeply wounded, we often do so with compassion, empathy, and an open heart. This powerful intention can naturally lead to an energetic exchange between us and the person we are helping.
Energetic Resonance and Absorption
Humans are electromagnetic beings. Our hearts and nervous systems emit fields that interact with others, this is known as resonance. When we come into contact with someone in deep pain or trauma, especially during emotionally open moments, our fields can attune to theirs.
This is often subconscious and occurs because:
We are empathically tuning into their pain to understand and help them.
Our nervous system "mirrors" theirs in an attempt to help regulate them.
We may be unknowingly absorbing their energetic imprints if we have not set strong energetic boundaries.
This absorption can feel like:
Emotional heaviness after a session
Sadness or grief that doesn’t belong to you
Physical tiredness or tension
Thoughts or emotions that feel foreign
This is especially common among those who have the "Wounded Healer" archetype, those who are naturally inclined to help others through pain because they have known pain themselves.
Why Releasing Is Essential
If we don’t regularly cleanse or release these energies, they can accumulate in our own system and lead to emotional imbalance, fatigue, or even illness. This is not selfishness, this is spiritual hygiene.
The Process of Absorbing and Releasing
Absorption is unintentional, it happens when you are deeply connected, listening, and concerned for another. But you do not have to carry what you’ve absorbed.
Here’s how I release what isn’t mine after these sessions:
My Releasing Practice
1. Awareness:I begin by acknowledging what I’m feeling and asking:"Is this mine, or have I taken on something from someone else?"
2. Grounding:I connect with the earth, through breath, bare feet on the ground, or visualization, to stabilize my own energy.
3. Breathwork:Intentional breath clears emotional residue. I may use a pattern like:Inhale deeply (4 counts), hold (4 counts), exhale (10+ counts), repeat. As I breathe, I imagine releasing the energy through the breath.
4. Meditation / Visualization:I picture any absorbed emotion as smoke, sludge, or energy leaving my body, often down through the feet or out through the crown, transmuted by the Earth or Source.
5. Statement of Sovereignty:I say something like:"I release all energy, emotion, or thought that is not mine. I call all parts of my own energy back to me now."
6. Water or Sound:Water (a shower, bath, or drink of water) helps move energy. Sound (for me binaural beats, pure tone 432/440 hz) breaks up stagnant fields.
Helping others is sacred. But when we help, we must maintain clear energetic hygiene to remain effective and whole.
We are witnesses and conduits, not containers.
The Pain we feel is not ours to carry, only to help alchemize.
